Axolotls are upcoming passive mobs that will be added in the upcoming 1.17 - Caves and Cliffs update.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Axolotls are tamable, aquatic mobs that will spawn in the rivers of the lush caves. Clicking on it with a water bucket will yield a bucket of axolotl. There are different color variations which are Leucistic (pink with dark pink frills), Wild (brown with dark brown frills), Cyan (has pink frills), Gold, and a rare blue one with orange frills that has a 1/1200 chance of spawning. There was a green variant used in pictures but was never added. The axolotl prey on fish[1] and squids. If an axolotl is picked up in a bucket by the player, it is considered tamed by the player. After doing so, the player can set them free in a more common environment or use them in marine adventures to help fight against drowned, guardians, and elder guardians. While swimming around, the axolotl may be distracted by nearby fish, and eventually lose the player if too much time is taken. They can be bred with Tropical Fish. Breeding them will trigger the advancement "The Parrots and the Bats". While being picked up in a bucket, the player will still most likely get the achievement "Tactical Fishing". When attacked, the axolotl will play dead for a brief minute to be left alone and gain health back.

Even though they don't spawn naturally yet as of Java Edition 20w51a, you can spawn axolotls in creative mode.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Axolotls headbutt to attack.
  • The axolotl is a real-life, critically endangered neotenic salamander species from Mexico.
  • In the full axolotl concept art, axolotls can play with each other, much like dolphins do with items.
  • If two ponds are near each other, an Axolotl may leave the first pond and run over to the other pond. If they spend more than a few seconds out of the water, their speed falls heavily.
  • They are the first Minecraft mob to have their name start with an A.
  • An Axolotl deals 2 damage, which was confirmed on a recent Mojang Q&A.[2]
  • They will attack Drowned and Guardians if the player tempts them with tropical fish.
  • They can grant the player temporary regeneration and removing any mining fatigue effects when the player kills a mob that the axolotl was attacking or being attacked by.
  • They will dry up and begin taking damage if they are out of water for longer than 5 minutes.
  • If they are out of water, they will slowly move towards the nearest water source that they can find.
  • They will swim around with the player if holding a tropical fish or tropical fish bucket in their hand.
  • There are 5 colors implemented in 20w51a, although this snapshot also removed the green variant shown in previous information.
  • They can swim "Upstream" by boosting themselves upward in rivers and other water bodies.
