Diamonds are very rare and valuable minerals, found in caverns and chests, used to craft tools, armor, enchantment tables, jukeboxes, and Diamond Blocks. Diamonds, like creepers, have become iconic to Minecraft and are considered one of the most valuable items in the game, due to their rarity and usefulness as a hard crafting material. Tools and armor made from diamonds are the second most durable and the second strongest in the game, being second only to Netherite Ingots.

Mining[edit | edit source]
Diamond ore drops a single diamond if mined with an unenchanted diamond, iron, or netherite pickaxe. The number of diamonds dropped increases by one extra diamond per fortune level, though it's not guaranteed that you'll end up getting more than one per ore. The ore is always found in layers 16 or lower. It is advised to look for diamonds in layer 11 or 12 to avoid mining into lava if strip mining.
Natural generation[edit | edit source]
Diamonds can be found in shipwreck treasure chests, stronghold altar chests, village toolsmith and weaponsmith chests, Nether fortress chests, jungle temple chests, desert temple chests, chest minecarts in abandoned mineshafts, buried treasure chests, and in End city chests. In Bedrock Edition, they can be found in stronghold altar chests, jungle temple chests, and buried treasure chests. They're rare loot in all chests except buried treasure chests. Diamond blocks are also naturally spawned in certain rooms in Woodland Mansions.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
- In the source code for Minecraft's Indev stage, diamonds were titled "emerald". When emerald itself was added to Minecraft, the name was changed to "diamond".
- Endermen used to drop diamonds in the earlier versions of Minecraft.
- Gold tools mine faster than diamond tools. However, the latter can mine a bigger variety of blocks, and last considerably longer.
- Diamond is the third hardest mineral in Minecraft, and the third-rarest (the rarest mineral being emerald since it can only be found in the mountains biomes).
- Despite diamond itself being non-renewable, most diamond equipment is renewable, since they are obtainable through villager trading and, though extremely rare, as a drop by numerous hostile mobs that are naturally spawned holding and/or wearing diamond gear.
- During Minecraft's Indev stage, diamond tools were very weak.
