Egg

From Minecraft Wiki

Eggs are throwable items added in the 7th Secret Friday Update, obtained only from chickens and villagers. They are laid by chickens every 5-10 minutes (takes 40 minutes for 9 chickens to lay 50 eggs, so it takes, on average, 7.2 minutes per egg).

Uses[edit | edit source]

As a Projectile[edit | edit source]

During the Beta update (20 December 2010), eggs were made throwable at the request of a fan.[1] When thrown, eggs have the same on-hit effect as Snowballs and additionally have a 1/8 chance of spawning a baby chicken which will grow up in 2-3 Minecraft days. Alternatively, eggs can be used as a projectile. They can be placed in Dispensers and fired upon activation. Like snowballs, eggs don't inflict any damage upon their target.

Trading[edit | edit source]

Farmer Villagers will buy eggs in exchange for Emeralds.

Spawning Baby Chickens[edit | edit source]

An egg has a 12.5% chance of spawning a baby chicken when thrown, a 0.4% chance of spawning four baby chickens.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • One egg can spawn up to four chickens; however, this is a rare occasion, and the chances are 1 out of 256 eggs (or a 0.4% chance). 256 is 16x16, or 16 stacks of eggs times the number of eggs per stack (16), meaning that it could take 16 stacks of eggs to spawn 4 chickens at once.
  • Chickens can also spawn from eggs shot out of a dispenser.
  • Eggs can be thrown very far, and often land over five blocks away from a player.
  • Eggs can normally be found wherever there are chickens unless the chickens are newly spawned.
  • Eggs are good as weapons, but are often misunderstood: not only can it knock an enemy back a short distance, but it is also easier to get than arrows, which involve complex crafting or risking player health by defeating skeletons. They also can spawn baby chickens, which provide food and feathers, and can push or swarm enemy mobs.
  • Eggs are the only throwable food item in the game.
  • Like snowballs, eggs can be used to destroy ender crystals, even if they don't deal actual damage to mobs.
