Health

A player with low health.

Health is a game mechanic in all versions of Minecraft. It is a gauge and monitor displaying how much damage the Player is able to take before dying, and is represented by a single row of 10 heart icons. Each full heart contains two halves, one point each for a maximum of 20 health points.

Hearts make up the health meter for the player in Survival, Hardcore (albeit with a different texture), and Adventure modes.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The hotbar, with hearts representing the health.

The health bar is located beside the Hunger bar, and above the experience bar. When a player's hunger bar is at 9 drumsticks (or completely full), they will slowly regain health. When health is at 2 hearts or less, the health bar will start shaking. The health bar won't regenerate if there are 8.5 drumsticks or less. The speed at which a player's health regenerates varies, depending on the Difficulty setting. When full, a player's health bar has 10 hearts, which is equal to 20 points of health, as 1 heart counts as two points of health.

Death[edit | edit source]

Death occurs when a player has lost all of their health. A screen will appear and offer the choice of either respawning (going back to the original spawn point, or the last bed they slept in) or returning to the main menu (the death screen will still be there upon re-entering the world). In Hardcore Mode players can either delete the world or go into spectator mode after they have died.

Drowning[edit | edit source]

When you go underwater, the bubble bar appears above the health bar. If the bubbles are completely gone, you start to lose health at Heart.png per second. Before 1.13, you can get all the bubbles back by going above water, but that no longer works. If you are above water, the bubbles will refill slowly.

Mob Health[edit | edit source]

This is a table showing how much health each mob has. When their health runs out, they die and may drop items. Mobs can die from lava, fall damage, drowning, suffocation, damage from a player, or damage from other mobs. For example, a Creeper may attack a Skeleton if its arrow hits the creeper.
