Houses are a vital aspect in the success of a player in Minecraft. They offer not only protection from hostile mobs, but a place in which to conduct most (or even all) of any necessary operations, such as crafting, smelting, enchanting, and repairing

Positioning[edit | edit source]

Houses can be built into cliffs, underground, in the sky, or even underwater. However, due to long building time, complexity, and the risk of drowning, building underwater is not recommended for beginners. A good house for beginners should be on a flat plain.

Building Materials[edit | edit source]

The material from which a house is built is largely up to a player, although a tough, incombustible substance is strongly recommended to avoid the risk of lightning, fire, or explosions. Concrete, stone, cobblestone, diorite, andesite, and granite are plentiful materials and ideally suited for house construction. Dirt may also be used because of its inflammability, but it is not explosion-proof. Obsidian is also a plausible material because it's explosion-proof, but is typically not used because of the amount of time needed to harvest a suitable amount of obsidian, as well as the fact that obsidian is typically located a fair distance away from the world spawn point. Wood, while aesthetically pleasing, is flammable, although it's still recomended for a first house, although consider as well that the woods from the nether are not flammable.

Necessities[edit | edit source]

  • A house should have no holes in it, and should be well-lit to prevent hostile mobs from spawning inside. It is recommended (but is not essential) to make the ceiling no more than 2 blocks high, so endermen cannot teleport inside.
  • A bed is a necessity, because it not only resets the spawn point after use, but also speeds the passage of night.
    • If you have any dye or colored wool in your inventory, you can craft a colored bed, which comes into sixteen different colors. But this is not a necessity.
  • A house should always have trapdoors or ordinary doors (which should always be kept shut) to prevent monsters from entering the house. On Hard difficulty, it is recommended to have more than one exit, or to put a one block gap beneath all your doors exterior. in case one door is broken down by a zombie, or to put a one block gap beneath all your doors exterior to prevent them from breaking the doors in the first place.
