The Locked Chest is part of the Beta 1.4 April Fools update by Notch. Their texture is the same as the chest (before Beta 1.8.1). They will also glow with a luminance of 15, identical to glowstone. They have been removed from the game as of 1.7, and they can only be obtained in versions before 1.7. However, even in versions in which the locked chest is not removed, the only way to obtain it is to use the /give command. Locked chests can be mined, but cannot be blown up using TNT. Since 1.4, they have had a purple/emerald texture, and they also decay after a random interval of time. The April Fools joke is when a player tries to open it, it says they will need a key from the Minecraft store. When the person buys the key, a pop up of a Jurassic Park Velociraptor made by Stan Winston Studios will appear (NOTE: it's truly the one from the sequel The Lost World Jurassic Park) while a track from Jurassic Park titled "Eye to Eye" plays. When a person makes over $10,000 in purchases, a message will appear saying "please exit if prone to seizures." This causes the screen to flash different colors. The store was removed completely from the game in Beta 1.7.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The locked chest is a reference to Team Fortress 2, where there is a "Mann Co. Supply Crate" which required a "Mann Co. Key."
  • The locked chest was completely replaced with the Stained Glass Pane in release 1.7.2 and can no longer be obtained in-game.
