Cut Sandstone (called Smooth Sandstone before 1.13) is a block naturally found in generated structures such as Desert Temples and Desert Villages. Cut sandstone can also be crafted, by placing four blocks of Sandstone in a 2x2 crafting grid, not requiring the 3x3 crafting grid from a Crafting Table

Behavior[edit | edit source]

Unlike sand, cut sandstone is unaffected by gravity and will not fall if placed without a supporting block. This block is not as similar in appearance to cobblestone as its not-smooth form. It is naturally found only in a Desert temple. In a previous version of Minecraft, sandstone could not be destroyed by an explosion caused by TNT or by creepers.

Variants[edit | edit source]

Cut Red Sandstone, formerly known as Smooth Red Sandstone, is a block added in 1.14 that can be crafted from red sandstone.

History[edit | edit source]

Chiseled and cut sandstone blocks were added in Minecraft 1.2.4. Sandstone stairs were added in the developmental snapshot 12w21a.

Bugs[edit | edit source]

  • In versions prior to 1.7.5, if one crafted cut sandstone in a 2x2 square crafting grid, one will get 4 cut sandstone. If one did this again, one would get those cut sandstone again.
