The main menu of Minecraft: Java Edition with random splash text.

Splash texts are the yellow lines of text on the title screen. They are randomly chosen from the list below and often feature references to popular culture (e.g. websites, quotes and video games). In the Java Edition, the splashes are defined in a plain-text file within minecraft.jar (.minecraft/versions/version/version.jar/assets/minecraft/texts/splashes.txt). Template:IN, the splashes are defined in a .json file. The splash pulsates on the title screen at a frequency of 2 Hz (120 Template:Tooltip).

Splash texts are not translated and appear the same regardless of the language setting chosen.

Splashes can be edited using a resource pack by editing the splashes.txt file.

Main article: Bedrock Edition removed features#Splashes

When a splash is removed, the line it occupied in splashes.txt / splashes.json is deleted, meaning the line number of all subsequent splashes lowers by one.

History[edit | edit source]

Java Edition[edit | edit source]

Splashes have been in Minecraft since Indev, with new ones regularly added, usually as part of major releases. Prior to Alpha v1.0.14, splashes were stored in an array of strings in the source code.

The following table summarizes splash changes per version:

Notes[edit | edit source]

  1. This is the line number of the splash in the "splashes.txt" file; splashes are not actually numbered in any way in splashes.txt itself.
  2. This splash is intentionally a duplicate, and is part of the joke, see Template:Bug
  3. The exact version a splash was added is not always known. In such cases, the earliest version the splash is known to have appeared in is listed.
