Steve (Super Smash Bros)

From Minecraft Wiki

Steve Rocks the Block!
—Introduction tagline (Steve).

Steve (スティーブ, Steve) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and is the second third-party representative from Microsoft after Banjo & Kazooie. He was confirmed as a playable character on October 1st, 2020 as the second downloadable character (from Fighters Pass Vol. 2.)  as well as Alex[1], a Zombie[2], and an Enderman[3] also appear as alternate costumes. Steve is classified as fighter #77.

Information[edit | edit source]

  • Similar to Mr. Game & Watch, Steve is lifted directly from his home game; his model and movement appearing identical to that of Minecraft. The layout of the texture is the exact same as skins from 1.8 onwards, though not having it all used due to Steve's model not using the upper layers. The Swedish Alex alternative costume is the only one with a hat layer, and it is not a full one.
  • Steve's weapon stays in his hand momentarily depending on the move he uses.
  • Steve can crawl.
  • Other alternate costumes are taken from the default selection of skins offered to players on the "Legacy Console" and "Bedrock" Editions of Minecraft, namely "Tennis" and "Scottish" Steve and Alex.

Moveset[edit | edit source]

  • Steve has a crafting mechanic, where he can mine the ground to obtain materials and upgrade his weapons by placing a crafting table.
  • Steve can place blocks, which crack and break automatically overtime after placing them. The only blocks he can place are dirt, oak planks, stone, iron blocks, TNT (as down special), and magma blocks (as up smash). Depending on the stage, the dirt can appear as white wool, sand (which does not fall), or ice. Crafting Tables can be spawned behind the playing field, which can linger after use, and Anvils are used as his down air and down throw when still having iron.
  • Steve has been shown using several tools from Minecraft in combat, and can seemingly use multiple weapons for the same attack. As of now, which directional input each showcased attack belongs to is speculative, but the following examples are clearly shown off in the presentation:
    • He is shown using swords and various other weapons for tilt attacks, including his forward smash.
    • His forward aerial is a downwards swing with a weapon.
    • His up aerial is a quick swing above his head with a weapon.
    • His down smash causes him to place lava out of a lava bucket in front of him, then behind.
    • His up special is an Elytra, which he uses to glide.
  • His final smash begins with him placing a giant piston in front of him, which extends to catch enemies in the attack. A cinematic plays where the affected fighter is launched into a dark building filled with TNT, where they are attacked by Creepers and Zombies, producing multiple explosions. This is named the House of Boom.

Aesthetics[edit | edit source]

  • Steve's character design is taken from their texture used in early Alpha builds of Minecraft, specifically prior to version "0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST," rather than their current, beard-less design.
  • One of Steve's victory poses has them build a house similar to ones found in Villages, stand outside of it, then close the door.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Steve was created by the Swedish video game company Mojang Studios. This makes them the second DLC fighter that was created outside of Japan, as well as the second third-party character created outside Japan.
    • The first were Banjo & Kazooie, created by the UK-based developer Rare, which are coincidentally also owned by Microsoft.
  • After Mr. Game & Watch, Steve is the second playable character to look almost identical to their original appearance, the first third-party character to do so, and the first to come from a conventional video game rather than an LCD game.
    • In Minecraft, since the Beta 1.9 Prerelease the bottom textures of all skins were flipped vertically, and though the bottoms of skins such as Steve's and the Zombie's heads had details that were affected by this, they were never adjusted to appear how they were originally intended. In Smash, the bottoms of Steve's and Zombie's heads are oriented the way they were originally, with the texture not being flipped, while Alex, whose skin was designed for the bottom to be flipped, also has her skin as originally intended. However, the bottoms of Steve's hands, and presumably his legs and body though the are solid colors, were not flipped.
    • The Zombie alternate costume uses the original texture, though there was a texture update in 1.14 of Minecraft. This is possibly so that it better matches with the Steve texture.
    • The Enderman alternate costume also was slightly altered to match the dimensions of Steve, as the character is much taller in the original game. It is similar to a Skeleton.
    • Steve's design in Ultimate has a beard, which was removed from his texture in the 0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST, though his beard still appears in some promotional artwork and merchandise afterwards.
  • Steve's reveal trailer contains multiple references to Minecraft:
    • The Enderman picking up the crate references their affinity for picking up blocks and carrying them around.
      • The Enderman also hides from the rain on Distant Planet. It references the fact that Endermen can receive damage from water in Minecraft.
    • Wolf throwing the Zombie causes it to drop meat, a reference to Rotten Flesh, which is their most common drop.
      • Additionally, wolves in Minecraft can be tamed and can help the player in combat.
    • Zombie is revealed breaking down a wooden door, which is an ability that Zombies have in Minecraft when playing on the hardest difficulty.
  • Steve is the fourth fighter to have one of their victory animations shown in their reveal trailer, the first three being Dark Samus, Joker, and Terry.
  • Minecraft also started out as an indie game in the past few years (mostly the Java Edition recently), making Steve the first playable character originated from an indie game, and the fourth indie game character to be featured (as a whole) in the game (the first being Sans from Undertale, Cuphead from Cuphead, and Shovel Knight from Shovel Knight).
  • Zombie and Enderman are the second and third playable fighters in the series to be generic enemies, the first being Piranha Plant.
    • Also after Piranha Plant, Steve is the second DLC character to not have any voice clips.
  • Steve and Byleth are the only characters in Ultimate whose alternate costume is displayed alongside their default costume on the official Ultimate site, similarly to Robin's page on the official SSB4 site.
  • Steve is the only character who has two names (in Steve's case he is listed as "Steve / Alex") displayed on the list of fighters on the official Ultimate website in all languages. Byleth was the first character to display two names in general, though this was only the case in languages where male and female Byleth had different names.
