Third person mode is a camera mode in Minecraft that can be toggled by pressing F5 in Java Edition and clicking the left stick (LS) on consoles. In Pocket Edition, one has to pause the game and go to Video Settings and select the preferred Camera View.

Upon joining a Minecraft world, one is in first person mode by default. Pressing the appropriate key or controller button once will give a view from behind the player and twice for a view in front of the player. One can return to first person by pressing the appropriate key or button once more.
